Stiffener plates are fundamental connections in a steel structure; they are secondary connections that support the main steel structure and are placed in calculated areas to prevent buckling and deformations. Stiffener base plates support the column and the base plate of a steel structure and are commonly made of the same steel components of both the base plate and vertical column. The plates are welded to the vertical column and base plate and transfer the load of the column to the base plate, distributing the load uniformly along the whole base plate. This helps reduce the stress applied from the metal column to the foundation and strengthens the metal beam as a whole structure.
